FLYERS 3, RED WINGS 2: Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist to help host Philadelphia record its first three-game winning streak since mid-December.
Giroux fooled Red Wings goaltender Joey MacDonald with a backhander on a first-period breakaway and set up Maxime Talbot’s shorthanded rebound goal with another breakaway rush at the 14:10 mark of the second period to put Philadelphia up 3-1.
Johan Franzen pulled the Red Wings to within one, scoring just as a man advantage ended at 8:47 of the third period.
Detroit lost for the fifth time in the past seven games and suffered its seventh straight defeat in Philadelphia, going back to 1997.
Red Wings center Henrik Zetterberg opened the scoring four minutes into the game, beating Ilya Bryzgalov over his left shoulder with a sweeping backhand. Zetterberg has nine points in his last five games.
MacDonald, starting in place of injured Jimmy Howard, made 20 saves. A miscue behind the net allowed Jakub Voracek to scoop up the puck and tie the score at 1-1 with a wrap around at 13:50 of the first period.
Voracek left the game in the second period after getting caught with his head down by Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall just inside the blueline.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Philadelphia retired Mark Howe’s No. 2 prior to the game. … Detroit’s two shots in the first period were a season low. … The home side has won 11 of the past 12 meetings. … Flyers right wing Jaromir Jagr left with a knee injury in the second period. … Bryzgalov made 37 saves.
