Defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron scored at 1:32 of overtime as the Tampa Bay Lightning avoided an embarrassing loss and posted a 4-3 home victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.

Sean Bergenheim recorded a goal and an assist, Steve Downie and captain Vincent Lecavalier also scored and Dwayne Roloson made 31 saves for the Lightning, who improved to 5-2-0 on their record-tying 12-game homestand.

Bergenheim entered the offensive zone and dished the puck to Bergeron, who beat All-Star Cam Ward from the top of the right faceoff circle for his first goal of the season and Tampa Bay's eighth win in 10 games.

Bergeron's goal salvaged a Lightning win that looked to be in doubt after Carolina All-Star rookie Jeff Skinner and Erik Cole stunned the crowd in Tampa, scoring in the final minute to erase a 3-1 deficit and force overtime.

After a scoreless first period, Tampa Bay got on the board at 4:26 of the second when Downie grabbed a loose puck in the slot and slid a backhander past Ward. Lecavalier doubled the lead during a power play less than four minutes later with his fourth goal in five contests.

Carolina halved the deficit at 9:08 as All-Star captain Eric Staal tipped the puck past Roloson during a man advantage. Bergenheim converted a 2-on-1 with 7:12 remaining in the third to restore the Lightning's two-goal bulge, setting the stage for the Carolina comeback.

Defenseman Joni Pitkanen notched two assists and Ward stopped 37 shots for the Hurricanes, who have lost four straight away from home and fell to 0-1-2 on their five-game road trip.
