Maryland 94, Virginia Tech 71: Freshmen Sean Allen and Jake Layman each tallied career highs, scoring 21 and 20 points respectively, as the Terrapins raced to a 16-point halftime lead in beating the visiting Hokies for their 13th straight win in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.
Maryland (13-1, 1-0 ACC) used a 19-6 run in the final 5:33 of the opening half to break away and take a 53-37 lead at the intermission. Layman scored 18 of his 20 in the half while Allen had 14 of his 21 after the break as the Terrapins were in total control.
Virginia Tech (9-5, 0-1) has lost three straight and four of five. Erick Green, the nation's second-leading scorer (24.4), had a game-high 28 points to Robert Brown added 11 for the Hokies.
Maryland, which is just one win shy of tying the school record for consecutive victories, shot 51.7 percent - the fifth straight game in which it has topped the 50-percent mark. Alex Len had 16 points and nine rebounds for Maryland and Dez Wells scored 12.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Maryland, which leads the ACC in rebound margin (plus-13.5), outrebounded Virginia Tech 40-35. The Terps have outrebounded all 14 opponents this season. ... Green has topped the 21-point mark in 13 of 14 games. ...
