Michigan appears to be turning a corner after struggling against its rival for more than a decade.
Trey Burke had a game-high 20 points and Zack Novak and Tim Hardaway Jr. each added 10 as the 19th-ranked Wolverines defeated No. 9 Michigan State 60-59 Tuesday at Crisler Center.
The win, Michigan’s third straight over the Spartans, is the school’s longest streak since winning five in a row from 1996-98.
Stu Douglass’ layup with 38 seconds left put Michigan (15-4, 5-2 Big Ten) ahead by one with 35 seconds left, and Michigan State (15-4, 4-2 Big Ten) couldn’t respond on the other end.
Draymond Green misfired on a running layup with three seconds left and then failed to convert on a tip-in at the buzzer after grabbing his own rebound.
Derrick Nix had a team-high 13 points and Green added seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Spartans, who trailed 36-29 at the half.
Michigan State trailed 47-36 with 12:24 left, but then used a 21-6 run over the next eight minutes to regain the lead at 57-53 on Nix’s layup. The Wolverines, however, closed with a 9-2 run and held the Spartans without a field goal over the final 4:22.
Much like last year’s meeting in Ann Arbor, Michigan State held a huge advantage on the boards. The Spartans, who outrebounded Michigan 44-25 in last year’s 70-63 loss, held a 31-15 edge on the glass this time around. Michigan finished with just one offensive rebound.
This was the first meeting since 1998 in which both schools were ranked in the top 25.
Michigan shot 51.1 percent from the field and committed just eight turnovers.
