WASHINGTON -- The Utah Jazz and Washington Wizards were set to meet last month, but a massive East Coast snowstorm altered plans.
When the teams finally faced off, an avalanche of turnovers undid the Jazz.
Guard John Wall had 17 points and 11 assists as the Wizards returned from the All-Star break with a 103-89 victory over Utah on Thursday.
Fueled by a potent fastbreak and 27 points off 23 Jazz turnovers, the Wizards (24-28) dominated the Jazz shortly after acquiring Phoenix Suns forward Markieff Morris before Thursday's trade deadline.
Center Marcin Gortat led Washington with 22 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Forward Nene and guard Bradley Beal each scored 16 points.
"It's the first game out of the break. Those are the scary ones," Beal said. "We did a great job of setting up pressure defensively. Our defense is what helped us out a lot, and then getting out in transition. It was a great win."
Forward Gordon Hayward led the Jazz (26-27) with 19 points, and guard Rodney Hood had 18. Center Rudy Gobert had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Utah had won seven consecutive games before losing in New Orleans on Feb. 10 in the final game before the break.
"We turned the ball over 23 times. You're just not going to win especially against a team that's able to convert like that," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said.
The teams, both hopeful for a playoff berth, were active before tipoff with moves ahead of the league-wide trade deadline.
Washington made the splashier deal, sending forward Kris Humphries, center DeJuan Blair and a 2016 first-round pick for Morris.
"We needed a jolt, we haven't been playing consistent," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said. "We think Morris can come in and help us make a playoff run."
The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 11.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in 37 games. In-game incidents, including throwing a towel in the face of former Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek, hampered his season. When focused, the athletic big man provides scoring punch.
"He can make plays for us," Wall said of Morris.
The Wizards ran plenty against the Jazz, finishing with 34 fastbreak points while shooting 48.8 percent from the field.
Washington turned a 49-42 halftime lead into a 17-point advantage in the third quarter. Utah pulled within five, but Washington pushed back. Beal scored 11 in the fourth quarter with his floater, giving the Wizards their largest lead at 102-83.
Washington held Utah to 40.3 percent shooting from the field.
"Third quarter was still bad, but other than that, we played great defense," Wall said.
The win moved Washington 2 1/2 games behind the Charlotte Hornets for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Wizards remain four games back in the loss column behind the fourth-place Atlanta Hawks.
The Jazz added point guard depth by acquiring Shelvin Mack from the Hawks for a 2018 second-round pick. Utah fell into a tie for eighth in the Western Conference with the Houston Rockets.
"Not a good start for us after the break," Hayward said.
Wall and Gortat each scored 11 points in the first half.
The makeup date for the Jan. 23 snow-out put the Wizards and Jazz into rough scheduling scenarios coming out of the break. Washington will play three games in three days, while Utah heads home to play the Boston Celtics on Friday.
"It's a strange game all the way around," Snyder said. "It's a makeup game and comes at the end of (the) break. For us, we fly across the country. ...
"We just didn't play good. We laid an egg tonight."
NOTES: With a three-games-in-three-days stretch beginning, Washington brought G Bradley Beal off the bench. The Wizards' second-leading scorer remains on a minutes restriction since returning from a stress leg injury last month. Garrett Temple made his 30th start, and he scored four points. ... Jazz G Trey Burke returned to the lineup after missing the final three games before the All-Star break with the flu. ... Wizards F Alan Anderson (ankle surgery) has yet to play this season, but he participated in a full practice Wednesday for the first time. Anderson and G Gary Neal (sore right leg) were inactive. ... Washington hosts the Detroit Pistons on Friday before facing the Heat in Miami on Saturday.
