Knicks 107, Kings 99: J.R. Smith matched a franchise record with nine 3-pointers and scored 29 points as visiting New York upended Sacramento.
Carmelo Anthony made five 3-pointers and tallied a game-high 36 points for the Knicks, who moved within two games of the eighth-place Atlanta Hawks for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Amar’e Stoudemire added 12 points for New York, which went 15-of-26 from behind the arc.
DeMarcus Cousins had 32 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists for the Kings, who rallied from a 24-point third-quarter deficit to make it a tight game in the fourth quarter. Ben McLemore scored 16 points, Travis Outlaw added 15 and Rudy Gay had 14.
Sacramento pulled within 96-94 with 4:30 remaining behind five straight points by Cousins before Smith drained his ninth 3-pointer and Stoudemire followed with a hoop to make it a seven-point margin. Tim Hardaway Jr. knocked down a jumper in the final half-minute to make it an eight-point game and the Kings didn’t score again.
New York had a 63-48 halftime lead and Anthony’s 3-pointer boosted the advantage to 74-50 shortly before the midway point of the third quarter. The Kings cut their deficit to 11 late in the third quarter before Smith ended the stanza with a 3-pointer to give New York an 86-72 lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Smith was 9-of-12 from 3-point range and joined Latrell Sprewell (twice), Toney Douglas, John Starks and Anthony as Knicks to make nine 3-pointers in a game. … Sacramento PG Isaiah Thomas (quadriceps) sat out the contest as Ray McCallum (10 points on 3-of-14 shooting) made his first career start. … Anthony has scored 20 or more points in 22 consecutive games.
