Spurs 99, Hornets 95: Tim Duncan scored 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting and added 10 rebounds as visiting San Antonio spoiled the debut of No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis.

Tony Parker added 23 points and six assists and Kawhi Leonard chipped in 19 points and seven boards for the Spurs, who outscored New Orleans 12-4 over the final 2:28 to steal the victory in the season opener for both teams.

Davis had a strong debut, posting a team-high 21 points and adding seven rebounds, and Greivis Vasquez handed out 13 assists for the Hornets.

New Orleans carried a 50-43 lead into the locker room but watched the lead disappear in the third quarter as San Antonio opened the period with a 17-4 burst. Leonard scored seven points during the spurt and Duncan added five before the Hornets fought back to tie it heading into the final frame.

Davis’ two free throws put New Orleans on top 91-87 with 2:42 left, but Duncan scored seven straight points for San Antonio to take back the lead. Davis made another pair of free throws with 1:07 on the clock, but Parker responded with a 3-pointer and the Hornets could not score again.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Spurs G Manu Ginobili (back spasms) and Hornets G Eric Gordon (sore left knee) both missed the game. … Al-Farouq Aminu scored 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting and Ryan Anderson added 11 points in 29 minutes off the bench in his New Orleans debut. … San Antonio scored 52 points in the paint to make up for a 6-of-20 effort from beyond the arc.
