76ers 89, Bulls 82: Jrue Holiday scored 8 of his 20 points in the final 4:13 and Spencer Hawes had a big game on the inside as host Philadelphia took a commanding 3-1 lead over No. 1 seed Chicago.
Hawes finished with 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting and eight rebounds and Andre Iguodala had his best game of the series with 14 points and 12 boards for the 76ers.
Philadelphia is bidding to become the fifth No. 8 seed in NBA history to knock off the top seed in the first round.
The Bulls were playing without Derrick Rose (knee) and Joakim Noah (ankle) but put up a fight thanks to a strong defensive effort. Chicago limited the 76ers to 39.2 percent shooting but did not have enough offense in the fourth quarter.
The Bulls pulled within 74-73 on Taj Gibson’s jumper with 4:33 left but Holiday refused to relinquish the lead, burying 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to stretch it back out to 80-73.
Chicago battled back to within a basket but could not get on top. Hawes turned the Bulls away with a layup at the 2:05 mark and, after Elton Brand blocked Carlos Boozer on the other end, Holiday hit two free throws to keep the gap at 84-80 with 51 seconds left.
Holiday shot 1 for 13 in the first half but recovered after the break, hitting 3 of 4 in the third quarter before coming through down the stretch.
Iguodala, Evan Turner and Jodie Meeks combined to hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 26 seconds to seal it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Boozer collected 23 points and 11 rebounds and Gibson added 14 and 12 to lead the Bulls. … The series shifts back to Chicago for Game 5 on Tuesday. … Philadelphia has not won a playoff series since 2003. … All-Star Luol Deng scored 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting for Chicago. He is averaging 8.0 points in the last three games.
