Luis Torrens and Ty France homered as the Seattle Mariners won for the ninth consecutive time when rookie Logan Gilbert starts, defeating the host Los Angeles Angels 7-4 Sunday afternoon in Anaheim, Calif.
The Angels' Shohei Ohtani hit his major-league leading 34th home run of the season with two outs in the ninth inning off Mariners right-hander Paul Sewald.
Los Angeles teammate David Fletcher went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts to snap his hitting streak at 26 games, two shy of the franchise record set by Garret Anderson in 1998.
Gilbert (4-2), who lost his first two decisions, allowed two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out a career-high nine. The two runs charged against him came after he exited, as Jose Iglesias lined a two-run double down the left-field line with two outs in the sixth off right-hander JT Chargois to plate two runners who reached base against Gilbert.
Torrens hit a solo shot with one out in the top of the fourth to give the Mariners a 3-0 advantage. France added a three-run shot an inning later to double the lead as Seattle took two of three games in the weekend series.
Angels left-hander Patrick Sandoval (2-4) allowed six runs -- four earned -- on six hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out nine.
The Mariners scored two unearned runs in the first. With one out, Mitch Haniger walked and France reached on an infield single, a comebacker that deflected off Sandoval's left wrist. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and, an out later, Torrens grounded a ball that first baseman Jared Walsh fielded before slipping and then throwing wide of Sandoval, who was racing to cover the bag. That allowed both runners to score.
The Angels finally scored in the sixth. Max Stassi lined the first pitch of the bottom half of the inning into center field for a single and, an out later, Taylor Ward followed with a double to left, ending Gilbert's afternoon. Chargois struck out Brandon Marsh before Iglesias' liner to left cut Seattle's lead to 6-2.
The Mariners added a run in the eighth on Tom Murphy's bases-loaded walk.
