J.D. Martinez hit three home runs, Rafael Devers added a pair and the visiting Boston Red Sox exacted revenge on the Baltimore Orioles, completing a three-game sweep of the American League East rival on Sunday afternoon with an overpowering 14-9 win.
After having been held to a total of five runs in three season-opening losses to the Orioles at Fenway Park last week, the Red Sox pounded Baltimore pitching for 27 runs in the rematch series, including a season-high 14 on Sunday.
The Red Sox have won six in a row.
Martinez led the sweep-completing assault on Sunday, bombing Jorge Lopez (0-2), Mac Sceroler and Tyler Wells for solo shots in the third, sixth and eighth innings, respectively. The homers were Martinez's third, fourth and fifth of the season.
Martinez also had an RBI single on the final pitch thrown by Lopez in the fifth. Lopez left having been charged with seven runs and eight hits in four-plus innings. He walked one and struck out four.
Martinez's first homer came four pitches after Alex Verdugo opened the game's scoring with a three-run shot, his first of the season, off Lopez in the third. Franchy Cordero and Enrique Hernandez were aboard.
Up 4-1, Boston put the game -- and series -- away with a five-run fifth, during which Devers hit a three-run homer two batters after Martinez's run-scoring single.
Devers added his second homer, a two-run blast, in the eighth to give him four for the season.
Right-hander Nick Pivetta (2-0) benefited from Boston's 17-hit attack. He worked a comfortable six innings, allowing four runs and seven hits. He struck out seven and walked three.
Maikel Franco hit his first homer of the season, a three-run shot off Pivetta, in the sixth after Baltimore had fallen behind 10-1. Trey Mancini added another three-run shot, his second homer of the season, in the seventh off Austin Brice.
Devers wound up with five RBIs, Martinez four and Verdugo three for Boston.
Joining Martinez in the multi-hit category for the Red Sox were Xander Bogaerts with three, and Devers, Verdugo and Hernandez with two each.
Franco added an RBI single for the Orioles, giving him two hits and four RBIs for the day. Mancini also had four RBIs, while Cedric Mullins contributed to a 10-hit Baltimore offense with a double, a single and two runs, and Ryan McKenna chipped in with a triple, a single and two runs.
Baltimore has lost five of six since the season-opening sweep in Boston.
