Jose Ramirez hit a leadoff home run in the 14th inning as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Royals 5-4 in Kansas City, but not before nearly blowing it in the bottom half of the 14th.
It was the longest game of the season for both teams.
After Ramirez homered, Jason Kipnis singled, Roberto Perez sacrificed Kipnis to second, and Jake Bauers singled to drive in Kipnis. Greg Allen bunted for the second out, then Francisco Lindo struck out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 14th, the Royals got back-to-back singles by Whit Merrifield and Alex Gordon followed by a walk to Hunter Dozier to load the bases with no outs against A.J. Cole. Jorge Soler scored Merrifield on a sacrifice fly but Cheslor Cuthbert flied out to left and Bubba Starling struck out to end the game.
Nick Goody (2-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief before Cole got his first save since 2015. Brian Flynn (2-2) took the loss for KC.
Mike Montgomery got his first home start for Kansas City, but took a no-decision after allowing one run on five hits with no strikeouts and one walk in five innings. He was the 36th overall pick by the Royals in the 2008 draft, but he was traded before he got to the big leagues as part of the 2012 trade with Tampa Bay that brought James Shields and Wade Davis to Kansas City. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on July 15 for catcher Martin Maldonado.
Cleveland starter Adam Plutko also took a no-decision. He gave up three runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in 5 1/3 innings.
Lindor hit Montgomery's first pitch 402 feet into the seats in left, his 17th leadoff home run in his career and his sixth this season. Dozier answered with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first, hitting a Plutko fastball just to the left of where Lindor's home run landed for his 16th homer of the season.
The Indians tied the score in the sixth on an RBI single by Kipnis. Montgomery left the game after five innings, but Jorge Lopez walked the first two batters in the sixth and was pulled. Kevin McCarthy got one out before yielding Kipnis' hit. After Perez struck out, Bauers grounded to Merrifield at second, but he bobbled the ball allowing the go-ahead run to score.
Plutko gave up a one-out single to Starling in the sixth inning to end his night. Reliever Oliver Perez got a fielder's choice before walking two batters, and he was replaced by Adam Cimber. Cimber hit Merrifield with his first pitch, tying the score.
