Matt Chapman homered, Mike Fiers pitched six shutout innings and Ramon Laureano made a game-saving throw as the Oakland Athletics edged the visiting Boston Red Sox 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Chapman cleared the wall in the opening inning against Boston ace Chris Sale and the Athletics made the run hold up as they blanked the Red Sox for the second straight night.

The loss is Boston's fourth in a row. The Red Sox (1-5) never lost more than three in a row last season en route to winning the World Series.

The right-handed Fiers (2-1) allowed five hits and didn't issue a walk while striking out three. Left-hander Ryan Buchter worked the seventh, right-hander Lou Trivino sailed through a perfect eighth and right-handed closer Blake Treinen was helped by Laureano's defensive play while pitching the ninth for his third save of the season.

With one out in the ninth, Xander Bogaerts barely missed a homer with a deep blast off the fence in right-center. Bogaerts hesitated after rounding second and continued toward third but Laureano unleashed a one-hop throw to narrowly retire Bogaerts at the plate.

The play was reviewed and the call was upheld. Treinen followed by walking Mitch Moreland and pinch runner Eduardo Nunez stole second before Treinen fanned Brock Holt to end it.

Treinen hasn't allowed a run in his last 20 regular-season appearances dating back to last season for Oakland (5-1).

Sale (0-2) gave up one run and three hits over six innings. The left-hander walked two and struck out one.

Sale, who recently signed a five-year, $145 million contract extension, has allowed four homers over nine innings in two starts this season.

He started off shaky as Chapman, the second hitter of the game, went deep on the seventh pitch of the at-bat. Chapman worked the count and ended up lining a full-count fastball over the fence in left.

The Red Sox had several chances to get on the board but came up empty each time.

Mookie Betts doubled to right with two outs in the third before Fiers retired Andrew Benintendi on a grounder to end the frame.

Singles by Rafael Devers and Moreland gave the Red Sox runners on the corners in the fourth but Fiers induced Holt to bounce out to first to end the inning.

Benintendi singled and stole second to open the sixth before Fiers retired the next three batters to conclude his 81-pitch effort.

Christian Vazquez ripped a two-out double in the seventh off Buchter. The left-hander recovered to strike out Jackie Bradley Jr. to end the inning.
