Yankees 4, Rangers 2: Brandon McCarthy turned in his third solid start since joining his new team to lead New York to a series win over visiting Texas.
McCarthy (5-10), who was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this month, allowed one run for the third straight start while permitting four hits in six frames. Brett Gardner and Francisco Cervelli each drove in a run and scored for the Yankees, who took the final three contests of the four-game series.
Colby Lewis (6-8) yielded three runs on four hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings as the Rangers fell for the fifth time in six games. J.P. Arencibia homered and Elvis Andrus singled in a run for Texas.
Andrus’ single scored Rougned Odor to give the Rangers a lead in the third inning but New York answered with the tying run on Chase Headley’s RBI single in the fourth and grabbed the lead in the fifth. Lewis walked Ichiro Suzuki leading off the frame and Cervelli followed with a double to left to plate the go-ahead run before moving to third on a bunt and coming home on Gardner’s sacrifice fly.
Adam Warren came on for McCarthy in the seventh and allowed Arencibia’s blast but Brian McCann doubled in a run for the Yankees to restore the two-run advantage in the eighth. Dellin Betances worked a perfect eighth and David Robertson took care of the ninth for his 25th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka is still feeling discomfort in his right elbow 10 days after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection. … New York 1B Mark Teixeira (lower lat strain) missed his fourth straight game. … Texas returns home to face American League-leading Oakland on Friday while the Yankees host the Toronto Blue Jays.
