Rockies 2, Padres 1: Charlie Blackmon hit a two-run homer as host Colorado slipped past San Diego to even the three-game set at one game apiece.
Blackmon had two of the Rockies’ seven hits and the All-Star outfielder slugged his 13th blast of the season in the third inning as Colorado won for only the fourth time in its last 22 games. Chris Denorfia had three hits and Rene Rivera homered for the Padres, who fell to 12-46 when scoring three runs or fewer.
Franklin Morales (5-4) allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings while defeating San Diego for the second time this season. Padres All-Star Tyson Ross (7-9) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings while losing for the fifth time in six decisions.
Colorado’s LaTroy Hawkins worked around a two-out double to Seth Smith in the ninth to notch his 16th save in 17 opportunities. Corey Dickerson came up empty on a diving attempt to snare Smith’s liner and Hawkins followed by retiring Denorfia on a fly to right.
DJ LeMahieu reached on an infield single in the third and Blackmon sent his shot over the fence in right later in the inning. San Diego got on the board in the sixth when Rivera homered to left.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rockies 1B Justin Morneau was 0-for-3 with a walk for only his second hitless outing over his last 14 games. … San Diego 3B Chase Headley was 0-for-4 after going 12-for-26 over the previous six games. … With injured LHP Brett Anderson (finger) about to return to the rotation, Colorado optioned LHP Yohan Flande to Triple-A Colorado Springs and recalled 1B/OF Kyle Parker from the same club.
