Padres 6, Rockies 1: Chase Headley drove in two runs with his second four-hit outing in a stretch of four games and Ian Kennedy struck out nine in seven innings as visiting San Diego defeated Colorado in the opener of a three game set.
Headley broke the game open with a two-run triple in the seventh inning as the Padres won for the sixth time in eight games and handed the Rockies their 18th loss in 21 contests. The outburst marked only the second time San Diego scored more than three runs over the past 11 contests.
Kennedy (7-9) allowed one run on four hits and issued two walks while winning his second straight start. Kevin Quackenbush took over for the eighth after a 56-minute rain delay interrupted play after seven innings and Tim Stauffer worked a scoreless ninth.
Colorado’s Tyler Matzek (1-3) was charged with five runs and eight hits in six-plus innings and departed after allowing a walk to Kennedy and a single to Chris Denorfia to start the seventh. Headley greeted Matt Belisle with a triple off the right-field fence to make it 5-1 and scored on Carlos Quentin’s fly to center.
Brooks Conrad hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to get San Diego on the board and Colorado tied it in the bottom of the inning on Drew Stubbs’ homer to left. The Padres added two in the sixth on doubles by Tommy Medica, Rene Rivera and Cameron Maybin.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Rockies have lost 16 of their last 21 home games. … Rivera reached base four times on two hits and two walks. … Colorado RHP Jhoulys Chacin won’t require shoulder surgery but will likely miss the remainder of the season.
