Athletics 5, Angels 0: Josh Reddick belted a solo home run in the first inning and Tyson Ross pitched six strong frames as Oakland captured the opener of the two-game series.
Seth Smith went 2-for-5 with two RBIs for the Athletics, who kicked off a seven-game road trip.
Reddick deposited a 1-2 offering from Dan Haren (1-4) over the right-field wall with two outs in the first to give Oakland all the offense it needed. Josh Donaldson plated Smith with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Smith delivered a two-run double an inning later for a 4-0 advantage.
Kurt Suzuki capped the scoring in the eighth with an RBI double.
Ross (2-3) allowed five singles and walked one while striking out two. The 25-year-old, who snapped a personal three-game losing streak, has yielded two runs over 12 innings in two starts against Los Angeles this year.
Haren was reached for four runs and six hits over six innings. The veteran has surrendered 14 runs in 16 2/3 frames over his last three outings.
Maicer Izturis collected three hits and stole a base for the Angels, who have lost four of six.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Izturis and Mark Trumbo combined for five of Los Angeles' eight hits. ... Angels first baseman Albert Pujols went 1-for-4, raising his average to .197. ... Oakland reliever Ryan Cook tossed a scoreless ninth. Cook has yet to allow a run in 17 2/3 innings this year. ... Suzuki (hand) and second baseman Jemile Weeks (ankle) returned to the Athletics' lineup, but third baseman Brandon Inge (hamstring) remained out.
