Diamondbacks 3, Braves 2: Chris Young’s solo home run broke a ninth-inning tie as Arizona avoided being swept in Atlanta.
Young came up with one out
and drilled a 2-2 pitch deep to left-center field against Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel (0-1), who had not allowed a run in his last 17 appearances.
J.J. Putz pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth to save the victory for David Hernandez (1-1), who stranded a pair of baserunners in the eighth inning.
The Braves drew first blood on Brian McCann’s RBI double in the third inning, and Michael Bourn’s sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 2-0.
Arizona starter Trevor Bauer, making his major league debut, was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the fifth inning but was spared the loss when Jason Kubel - who ended the second inning when he was thrown out at home by Jason Heyward - tied the game with a two-run double in the sixth.
Bauer allowed five hits and three walks, striking out three. He threw 74 pitches.
Jair Jurrjens went 5 2/3 innings for Atlanta, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kimbrel had not allowed a run since May 4. ... Atlanta remained 3 1/2 games behind Washington in the National League East. The Nationals come to town for a three-game series beginning Friday. ... The 21-year-old Bauer was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 draft. ... Jurrjens has given up just three runs in 13 1/3 innings over his last two starts after allowing 17 runs on 16 1/3 innings in April.
