Yankees 6, Angels 5: Nick Swisher snapped a tie by plating Raul Ibanez with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning as visiting New York salvaged the finale of its three-game series and ended Los Angeles' eight-game winning streak.
Curtis Granderson belted a three-run homer and Robinson Cano added a two-run shot during a five-run third inning for the Yankees. The victory was the sixth in eight outings for New York.
Ivan Nova (6-2) labored through 6 2/3 innings, yielding five runs on eight hits to defeat Los Angeles for the second time this season.
With the score tied at 5-5, Ibanez deposited an offering from Hisanori Takahashi (0-2) to center field. The ball caromed high off the wall and away from outfielder Peter Bourjos, allowing Ibanez to end up at third with a stand-up triple. The veteran came around to score on Swisher's sacrifice fly to left center.
The slim advantage proved to be enough as two relievers bridged the gap to Rafael Soriano, who stranded a runner at second in the ninth for his sixth save.
Mark Trumbo homered for the fourth straight game and Mike Trout added a two-run double for the Angels.
New York seized a 5-1 lead in the third inning after Granderson jumped on a 3-2 fastball from starter Ervin Santana and belted it over the wall in right-center field. After Alex Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, Cano also took Santana's offering and sent it over the wall in right-center.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Former Yankees and Angels pitcher Jim Abbott tossed out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the contest. ... Granderson's homer was his 19th of his career versus the Angels. ... Trumbo's homer was the 13th surrendered by Nova this season. He gave up that many in all of 2011.
