Emergency starter Anthony Swarzak had a no-hitter for 7 1/3 innings and Danny Valencia knocked in the only run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 1-0 win over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.
The Twins loaded the bases in the 10th against Los Angeles reliever Hisanori Takahashi (1-1) before Valencia singled home the winning run off reliever Kevin Jepsen.
The rally followed a stellar outing by Swarzak, who started in place of scheduled starter Francisco Liriano and carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning before Peter Bourjos doubled with one out to end the no-hit bid.
Swarzak pitched eight shutout innings and struck out four. Minnesota reliever Alex Burnett (1-3) pitched a scoreless 10th inning to get the win.
Swarzak matched Angels starter Jered Weaver, who again failed to win his seventh game. The Los Angeles ace pitched nine innings of two-hit, shutout ball but couldn’t get any run support as Minnesota won just its second game in its last eight tries.
