Leon Washington returned two kickoffs for touchdowns as the Seattle Seahawks held off the visiting San Diego Chargers 27-20 on Sunday.
Matt Hasselbeck passed for 220 yards and a touchdown for the Seahawks (2-1) to help overcome a team-record 455 yards passing from Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.
San Diego tied it at 20-20 when Rivers hit Antonio Gates down the middle with a 12-yard pass and then connected with Legedu Naanee for a two-point conversion with 6:39 left. But that momentum was quickly swept away when Washington took the ensuing kickoff and ran it back 99 yards to put Seattle back on top.
San Diego (1-2) had two more chances in the red zone but Rivers could not complete a pass on fourth down.
The Seahawks jumped out to a big lead with a pair of touchdowns sandwiching the half. Hasselbeck found tight end John Carlson down the middle for a 9-yard score with 53 seconds left to make it 10-0 and Washington made it a three-score game when he returned the opening kickoff of the second half 101 yards for a touchdown.
The Chargers battled back in the third, getting a touchdown on their first possession of the third when Rivers needed just four plays to get his team into the end zone, hitting Malcom Floyd from 3 yards out to cut it to 17-7.
San Diego added two more points when Brandon Siler sacked Hasselbeck in the end zone for a safety.
