Lakers 107, Celtics 104: Kendall Marshall had 19 points and 14 assists and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer as visiting Los Angeles halted a six-game losing streak and spoiled the season debut of Boston’s Rajon Rondo.
Pau Gasol had 24 points, 13 rebounds and six assists and Ryan Kelly scored a career-high 20 points as the Lakers won for only the second time in 14 games. Jodie Meeks added 17 points for Los Angeles, which trailed by eight before closing the contest with a 13-2 run.
Kelly Olynyk posted season highs of 25 points and seven assists and Gerald Wallace added 14 points for the Celtics, who lost for the 10th time in 11 games. Rondo had eight points and four assists in 19 minutes in his first game since tearing the ACL in his right knee nearly 12 months ago but missed a tying 3-point attempt with 1.9 seconds left.
Rondo started and was scoreless in five minutes and then returned in the second quarter for another five-minute stint and made four straight shots in a 92-second span. He started the second half and delivered his first three assists during another five-minute stretch and returned with 4:53 left in the game but failed to make an impact down the stretch.
The Celtics led 82-76 entering the fourth quarter and Olynyk scored the first 10 Boston points of the stanza and 12 overall to help build a 102-94 lead with 4:11 to play. The Lakers answered to take a 105-104 lead on Marshall’s corner 3-pointer with 1:09 remaining before Kelly later added two free throws.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Los Angeles G Wesley Johnson had 11 points and a season-high 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the campaign. … Boston recorded a season-high 34 assists and committed just eight turnovers while the Lakers made 20 miscues. … The Lakers were without F Nick Young, who was serving a one-game suspension for throwing a punch at Phoenix PG Goran Dragic on Wednesday.
