Orioles 3, Rays 0: Adam Jones registered a pair of infield hits and knocked in a run and starter Miguel Gonzalez pitched five strong innings as host Baltimore blanked Tampa Bay to sweep the rain-shortened, two-game series.
Nick Markakis also recorded a pair of hits while Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy each had an RBI for the Orioles. Gonzalez (1-1) allowed three hits, walked three and struck out six before Zach Britton gave up only two hits in three innings and Tommy Hunter worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to notch his fourth save.
Desmond Jennings had two hits and Matt Joyce doubled for the Rays, who have scored only 14 runs in their last nine games – one in the series. Starter Jake Odorizzi (1-2) went five innings, yielding three runs on five hits and three walks to lose his second straight as Tampa Bay was shut out for the third time this season.
Markakis made a diving catch in right field and doubled off James Loney at second base to end a Rays threat in the fourth inning. Nelson Cruz walked, Chris Davis singled and Jones bunted for a base hit to lead off the Orioles’ half of the fourth before Wieters’ sacrifice fly to deep center and Hardy’s fielder’s choice made it 2-0.
Baltimore loaded the bases with two walks and a single by Markakis in the fifth before Jones’ infield hit brought Ryan Flaherty home to increase its lead. Tampa Bay put three on base in the seventh with one out, but Britton got Ben Zobrist to ground into a force play at home and struck out Wil Myers.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Britton has not allowed a run in 11 1/3 innings over his first six outings of the season - all out of the bullpen. … Wieters recorded his 54th RBI versus the Rays, tying Toronto 1B Adam Lind for the most against the franchise since 2009. … The Rays start a four-game series at home against the New York Yankees on Thursday and Baltimore begins a four-game set at Boston on Friday.
