The Dallas Stars took advantage of a short-handed Los Angeles Kings defense, getting an overtime goal from Denis Gurianov to earn a 3-2 victory on Friday in their home opener.
The decisive goal came on Gurianov's backhanded shot on a breakaway with 45 seconds to play. The Stars tied for the NHL lead last season with eight overtime or shootout defeats at home.
Miro Heiskanen scored the game-tying goal in the third period, while the Stars also got a first-period goal from Tyler Seguin.
The Kings, who lost star defenseman Drew Doughty to injury in the second period, got goals from Anze Kopitar and Gabriel Vilardi.
The Kings and Stars were playing each other for the first time since January 2020 and the first time at Dallas since January 2019.
Los Angeles goalie Jonathan Quick made 20 saves, while Stars goalie Braden Holtby made 43 saves.
Kopitar gave the Kings a 1-0 lead at 17:11 of the first period when he redirected a cross-ice pass from Viktor Arvidsson into a wide-open net. Kopitar netted his sixth goal of the season, and he has scored in all four games.
Just over two minutes after the Kings took the lead, the Stars tied it 1-1 on a power play with Seguin's first goal of the season.
With 4:01 remaining in the second period, Doughty was lost for the game after taking a blow to his right knee from the Stars' Jani Hakanpaa, who earned a five-minute major and a game misconduct.
Less than two minutes later, Vilardi scored on the power play just inside the left post for his first of the season.
Heiskanen tied it 2-2 with a power-play goal at 10:58 of the third period. He appeared to mishit the shot from the right faceoff circle, and the change of pace appeared to fool Quick, who couldn't make the stop.
