Wendell Moore Jr. scored 25 points as No. 21 Duke overcame a horrible first-half stretch to defeat Boston College 83-82 on Wednesday night in Durham, N.C.
Moore made a fadeaway jumper at the 43-second mark with the shot clock about to expire for an 80-77 edge. He ended up 8-for-13 from the field.
Moore was just 1-for-21 from the field in the previous four games.
Duke (4-2, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) played its first game since Dec. 16, with two games last week called off because of coronavirus issues with would-be opponents. It marked the longest midseason break in program history.
The Blue Devils were without Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, who's in quarantine because of close contact with a family member who tested positive for coronavirus. Associate head coach Jon Scheyer directed the team.
Matthew Hurt's 17 points and DJ Steward's 14 points along with 12 points apiece from Jeremy Roach and Jordan Goldwire also boosted Duke.
CJ Felder poured in 24 points on 10-for-13 shooting for the Eagles (2-8, 0-4). Boston College's Rich Kelly, in his first starting role, scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half. DeMarr Langford Jr. and Steffon Mitchell each had 12 points and Jay Heath ended up with 10 points.
Duke wiped out a 16-point hole over slightly more than four minutes spanning the halves.
Boston College's Heath hit a pair of foul shots with 1:43 left for a 75-75 tie. Hurt's 3-pointer then gave the Blue Devils their largest lead of the game.
Goldwire made two foul shots with 29 seconds to go to re-establish a three-point edge before a Boston College turnover led to a Moore made free throw. A late Felder 3-pointer came with less than one second left.
Duke shot just 15-for-25 on free throws.
Boston College, on the strength of 67-percent shooting from the field (including 5 of 8 on 3-pointers), led 43-35 at halftime. The Eagles were up by 16 at one point before Duke cut the gap with a flurry in the final 2 1/2 minutes of the half.
Duke scored the first four points of the second half, with Kelly picking up his third and fourth fouls in the first 1 1/2 minutes after halftime. Soon, it was tied at 46-46.
