Myles Dread hit a 3-pointer from the right wing as the buzzer sounded, lifting Penn State to a 72-69 home victory over VCU on Wednesday in a game the Nittany Lions seemed to have in hand.
Sophomore Seth Lundy scored 20 of his career-high 32 points in the second half and Sam Sessoms finished with 17 points for the Nittany Lions (2-0), who led by eight points with 3:46 remaining.
Lundy, whose previous high was 19 against Iowa last year, shot 11-of-19 from the field, including 5-of-10 on 3-pointers. Sessoms finished 6-of-11 from the floor off the bench and Myreon Jones added six points, six assists and four steals, for the Lions, who shot 41 percent (25-of-61) and just 9-of-26 from the arc.
Levi Stockard III had 13 points and Nah'Shon Hyland added 11 points and six rebounds for VCU (2-2), which fell short in its bid for a first road victory against a current member of the Big Ten.
Lundy drained two free throws to provide the 68-60 lead with just under four minutes, but the Rams battled back and tied the game 69-69 on a reverse layup with 8.5 seconds by Jamir Watkins, his only basket of the game.
Dread, who was 0-for-4 for the game until that point -- all 3-pointers -- then took a skip pass from Jamari Wheeler after a timeout and drained the game winner.
Lundy scored 12 points in the first half and the Nittany lions forced 10 turnovers to take a 35-32 advantage at the break.
VCU got eight points from Stockard and forced nine turnovers with its pressure defense in the first half, but the Rams had just two leads that each lasted a matter of seconds.
