Monmouth added another big-name scalp to its growing early season list.
Point guard Justin Robinson sank two free throws with 3.6 seconds left, giving the Hawks a 70-68 upset of No. 17 Notre Dame on Thursday night in a quarterfinal matchup at the Advocare Invitational in Kissimmee, Fla.
Robinson finished with a game-high 22 points and four assists for Monmouth (3-1), which knocked off a Top 25 team for the first time in 24 tries. The Hawks opened the season with a victory at UCLA.
Guard Micah Seaborn added 15 points and guard Je'Lon Hornbeak contributed 12 for Monmouth, which overcame a 37-29 halftime deficit to advance to a Friday night semifinal.
All five Fighting Irish starters scored in double figures, led by point guard Demetrius Jackson's 20 points. Jackson converted a three-point play with 32 seconds left to tie the score at 68 but missed a 3-pointer from just inside half-court as time expired.
Forward V.J. Beacham added 14 points for Notre Dame, and forward Zach Auguste and guard Steve Vasturia each scored 12. Forward Bonzie Colson contributed a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Notre Dame (3-1) outrebounded Monmouth 45-33 but made only 8 of 17 free throws, missing seven after halftime.
