North Dakota State 80, Oklahoma 75 (OT): Lawrence Alexander buried the tying jumper with 11.2 seconds left in regulation and finished with a career-high 28 points as the Bison earned the first NCAA tournament win in school history by stunning the Sooners in Spokane, Wash.
TrayVonn Wright added 14 points and Marshall Bjorklund scored 13 for No. 12 seed North Dakota State (26-6), which will face fourth-seeded San Diego State in the West Regional round of 32 on Saturday. Summit League Player of the Year Taylor Braun was held to 11 points but Carlin Dupree scored all four of his points off the bench in overtime to give the Bison a lift.
Cameron Clark scored 22 of his 25 points after the half and Isaiah Cousins added 17 for No. 5 seed Oklahoma (23-10). Cousins fouled Braun with 32 seconds left in regulation and then split a pair in his own trip to the line before Alexander got a kick out pass from Braun on the right wing and buried the tying 3-pointer.
The Sooners were up by four with 39 seconds left in regulation before allowing the tying basket and then missed three shots on the final possession of regulation. Dupree came off the bench for the first time when Braun fouled out with 1:18 left in the extra period and hit the go-ahead free throws before knocking down a layup with 42 seconds on the clock to help put it away.
North Dakota State closed the first half on an 11-0 run to take a 37-29 lead into the locker room and Oklahoma came back to knot it at 50 with 11:40 to play before going the next 7:39 without a field goal. Clark’s short jumper 3:01 remaining ended the drought and the Sooners took their first lead of the second half on Cousins’ free throws with 1:30 left.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Bison, who led the NCAA in field goal percentage at .509, shot 62.5 percent in the first half but were held to 44.4 percent after the break. …. Oklahoma missed five of its 18 free throw attempts while North Dakota State went 20-of-22 from the line. … The Sooners have not made it past the first game of the NCAA tournament since a run to the regional final in 2009.
