No. 16 Wichita State 79, William & Mary 62: Fred VanVleet collected 18 points and eight assists as the Shockers took over in the second half to dispatch the visiting Tribe.
Cleanthony Early added 14 points and nine rebounds and Ron Baker scored 13 for Wichita State (3-0), which forced 14 turnovers. Kadeem Coleby chipped in 10 points for the Shockers.
Marcus Thornton scored 18 points and Tim Rusthoven recorded 12 of his 13 points in the first half as William & Mary (1-2) fell to 0-2 on the road. Omar Prewitt was the only other player to reach double figures with 11 points off the bench for the Tribe.
Wichita State began the second half with a 20-6 run to turn a 39-38 halftime deficit in a 13-point lead. Coleby scored six points during the burst while VanVleet and Baker each buried a 3-pointer.
William & Mary cut it to a 61-54 deficit with 8:50 left, but the visitors went the next 3:40 without a field goal as the Shockers stretched their lead back to double figures. The Tribe crawled back within 69-61, but went the final 4:49 without a field goal as Wichita State closed it out.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The contest was part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, which continues with home games this week before the championship rounds in Kansas City, Mo., on Nov. 25-26. … The Shockers won the battle of the boards, 38-30. … The Tribe hurt themselves at the free-throw line, converting 11-of-22.
