No. 25 Baylor 66, South Carolina 64: Brady Heslip drained five 3-pointers and scored 18 points as the host Bears survived an overturned foul call at the buzzer and edged the Gamecocks.
Isaiah Austin battled foul trouble for the entire second half to add 14 points while fellow sophomore Taurean Prince tallied eight points and 12 rebounds for Baylor (2-0), which won despite a 22-of-41 effort from the foul line. South Carolina had three shots to tie the game in the final seven seconds and Michael Carrera appeared to draw a foul as time expired, but officials overturned the initial call after replay.
Freshman Sindarius Thornwell poured in a game-high 20 points for South Carolina (1-1), which has only two road victories since the beginning of the 2011-12 season. Brenton Williams chipped in 12 points and was the only other Gamecock to finish in double figures.
Williams’ 3-pointer with 15:49 remaining gave South Carolina a five-point advantage before Heslip capped a 9-2 stretch with two 3-pointers. Demetrius Henry answered with consecutive baskets, but another 3-pointer and a pair of free throws from Heslip allowed the Bears to take a 60-55 lead.
Thornwell scored six of the Gamecocks’ next nine points to tie the game at 64 with 4:27 left before one free throw apiece from Royce O'Neale and Kenny Chery accounted for the only scoring for the remainder of the game.
