Maryland 69, George Mason 62: Dezmine Wells scored a career-high 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting as the Terrapins defeated the Patriots in the BB&T Classic in Washington.
Leading 51-49 with 7:20 left, Pe’Shon Howard knocked down two free throws to spark a 7-2 Maryland run that put the Terrapins ahead for good. Nick Faust added 14 points and Alex Len chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks as Maryland (6-1) overcame 19 turnovers to win their sixth straight game.
Sherrod Wright and Patrick Holloway led George Mason (5-3) with 17 points apiece.
Wells scored Maryland’s first eight points as the Terrapins ran out to a 13-6 lead 5:55 into regulation. Two Wright free throws pulled the Patriots within 29-28 with 2:12 left in the first half before Wells’ 3-pointer with 13 seconds left sent Maryland into halftime with a 34-30 edge.
Anali Okoloji's 3-pointer capped a 7-0 George Mason run to start the second half before six straight points by Wells put the Terrapins back ahead 43-39 with 14:42 left. Both teams battled down the stretch before Maryland pulled away in the closing minutes.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Maryland is now 8-0 all-time against George Mason... The Terrapins outrebounded the Patriots 45-31. ... Len has now recorded at least 10 points, seven rebounds and a block in all seven games this season.
