No. 21 San Diego State 78, No. 24 UCLA 69: Jamaal Franklin led all scorers with 28 points and the Aztecs continued their dominance of Pac-12 teams with a decisive victory in the John Wooden Classic at Anaheim, Calif.
Franklin picked the pocket of UCLA’s heralded freshman Shabazz Muhammad near midcourt and turned it into a dunk to give San Diego State a 69-58 lead with four minutes to play. UCLA couldn’t get any closer than five points the rest of the way.
San Diego State (5-1), which has won 11 games in a row against Pac -12 teams and 25 straight against teams from California, also got 19 points from Xavier Thames and a dozen from Deshawn Stephens.
The Bruins (5-3) were led by Jordan Adams with 23 points, capping a rough week in which they also lost to lightly-regarded Cal Poly and had key reserves Tyler Lamb and Josh Smith transfer from the school.
Muhammad finished with 16 points and Larry Drew II had six points and 11 assists for UCLA. San Diego State has won its last 75 games when leading with five minutes to play and beat UCLA for the first time in the last nine meetings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Although it was a neutral site, the majority of the large crowd at the Honda Center was there to support the Aztecs. … Chase Tapley, who missed the Aztecs’ win over USC on Sunday with a strained patella tendon, returned to the lineup and scored nine. …San Diego State led 31-29 at the half.
