LOS ANGELES -- The San Antonio Spurs wasted little time jumping on the Los Angeles Lakers and coasted to an easy win Sunday at Staples Center.
Kawhi Leonard scored 25 points, and the Spurs hammered the Lakers 119-98. LaMarcus Aldridge contributed 16 points and nine rebounds and Pau Gasol added 15 points and seven boards for the Spurs (45-13), who beat the Lakers for the eighth consecutive time and seventh in a row at Staples.
"It was a good trip. We had one bad night out of 11 or 12 days," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, whose club played it last eight games on the road, going 6-2. "I thought they maintained their focus really well, especially coming back off the (All-Star) break and playing the last couple of games. I thought we did a good job."
San Antonio has a four-game winning streak.
Spurs center Dewayne Dedmon, who played college ball at nearby USC, chipped in 11 points, hitting all four of his field-goal attempts, and nine rebounds. Dedmon also delivered a highlight reel dunk on an offensive rebound in the first half.
Brandon Ingram scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Lakers (19-41), who lost their fourth straight. Jordan Clarkson had 19 points and D'Angelo Russell scored 18.
"We didn't get as many stops as we wanted to start the game and it kind of got out of hand early," Russell said.
Los Angeles is 2-7 in February.
Although turnovers cost the Lakers -- they had 19 (resulting in 27 points) to 12 (nine points) for the Spurs -- coach Luke Walton was disappointed in his team's failure to compete in the opening half.
"We came out today and I don't know if it was the early start or what," Walton said. "I love our guys and I'm supportive toward them, and I think they did a good job in the second half, but that first half, that can't happen if we're trying to build and trying to get somewhere. That was unacceptable."
San Antonio rolled to a 36-20 advantage after one quarter and never allowed the lead to dip below double digits.
"They had runs here and there, but (Popovich) did a good job of calling timeouts to end those runs and we just stayed focused tonight from the start of the game," said Leonard, who scored 16 points in the first quarter.
The Spurs led 61-41 at the break. Leonard had 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting before intermission to lead all scorers. Leonard finished hitting 9 of 18 shots from the floor and converted a pair of 3-pointers.
The Spurs shot 51 percent in the first half compared to 45.2 percent for the Lakers. Los Angeles committed 12 turnovers (leading to 19 points) to only four (two points) for San Antonio in the first half.
"That first half, we came out and were playing sluggish and slow," Clarkson said. "We were looking like the older team, and we want to be the team that's pushing the ball and creating stuff in transition."
For the game, the Spurs made 52.1 percent of their shots to 46 percent for the Lakers.
The Spurs recorded 37 assists to 16 for the Lakers. The Spurs were an assist shy of a season high. They had 38 against the Brooklyn Nets in December.
"Obviously it was a good trip to test ourselves and come together," said Gasol, who played his second game after missing 15 contests with a broken left hand. "Show that you can get it done on the road; build some stuff, some toughness, physicality, execution, discipline. So I think all that was well accomplished and I was able to join these last two games, get back on the court, contribute, produce and feel well, too."
