LaMarcus Aldridge contributed 15 points and 12 boards while Nicolas Batum and Damian Lillard each scored 11 points for the Trail Blazers, who improved to 2-1 on their four-game road trip.
Marreese Speights had a game-high 22 points and 13 rebounds and Rudy Gay added 19 and nine for the Grizzlies, who failed to reach the 100-point mark for the 14th consecutive time.
Memphis held a one-point lead after the opening quarter and increased it to eight in the second before entering the half with a 50-47 advantage as the lead changed 12 times. Speights kept the Grizzlies afloat in the third, scoring 16 of the team's 22 points in the period on 6-of-7 shooting as Portland pulled even at 72-72.
Both teams struggled to score and each was ahead several times in the fourth before Batum buried a 3-pointer with 3:27 remaining to put the Trail Blazers ahead for good at 83-80. Down by one, Memphis missed a pair of shots in the waning seconds before Gay was off the mark with a potential tiebreaking jumper at the buzzer.
