Rudy Gay’s fadeaway jumper with 0.9 seconds remaining lifted the visiting Memphis Grizzlies to a 100-98 victory over the stumbling Toronto Raptors on Monday.
Gay scored 21 points and Zach Randolph added 17 and 12 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who pulled within a game of .500 at 22-23 with their third consecutive win. The Raptors have lost eight in a row.
Toronto's NBA record of 986 straight games with a 3-pointer also came to an end as it shot 0-of-13 from the arc. Andrea Bargnani and Sundiata Gaines were both 0-of-4.
After Toronto's Jerryd Bayless tied it at 98-98 on a driving layup with 18 seconds left, Memphis called timeout and drew up a play for Gay, who pulled up from 14 feet with less than a second on the clock and nailed the jumper.
The Grizzlies opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 burst to push the lead to 12 points with 8:26 left. But the Raptors bounced back, ripping off an 11-0 spurt over the next three minutes to pull within 88-87.
It went back and forth in the final minutes before Gay’s heroics. Mike Conley scored five points over the final 2:14 to help keep Memphis close and Marc Gasol finished with 17 points.
Bargnani scored 29 points and DeMar DeRozan added 25 for Toronto.
