Angels 9, Rangers 3: Collin Cowgill smacked a three-run triple to cap a seven-run, eighth-inning uprising as visiting Los Angeles defeated Texas.
Erick Aybar had a two-run double and Kole Calhoun homered as the Angels won for the sixth consecutive time. Gordon Beckham, Brennan Boesch and Mike Trout also drove in runs as Los Angeles moved 8 1/2 games ahead of the Oakland Athletics in the American League West.
Hector Santiago (5-7) allowed one run and five hits in five innings to win his fifth consecutive decision. Rangers starter Colby Lewis (9-13) allowed just three runs (two earned) and five hits in seven innings before the bullpen let the game get away as Texas lost for the ninth time in its last 10 games.
The Angels led 2-1 in the eighth before Trout’s run-scoring triple to right-center began the eighth-inning splurge. Aybar’s double made it 5-1 and Beckham drew a bases-loaded walk before Cowgill cleared the bases with his triple to right.
Calhoun led off the game with a homer and Boesch hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it 2-0. Texas got on the board when Adrian Beltre homered with one out in the fourth and the Rangers later added two in the eighth on Ryan Rua’s two-run double.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Adrian Beltre reached base four times on three hits and a walk. … Angels LF Josh Hamilton (shoulder) sat out for the fifth straight game. … Texas OF Engel Beltre (stress fracture in his left leg) will undergo surgery on Wednesday.
