Marlins 7, Braves 0: Jeff Mathis homered and had three RBIs to back eight scoreless innings from Nathan Eovaldi as visiting Miami averted a sweep and snapped a six-game losing streak.
Eovaldi (3-5) won for the first time in nine starts, allowing seven hits and striking out six to halt Atlanta's string of six straight victories. Eovaldi also blanked the Braves on one hit over seven innings on Aug. 10 to end their 14-game winning streak.
Mathis clubbed a solo homer in the second inning and capped a five-run third with a two-run double to chase Braves starter Alex Wood. Ed Lucas added a two-run single and Placido Polanco and Donovan Solano combined for five hits and two RBIs for the Marlins.
Wood (3-3) turned in a rare clunker, lasting only 2 1/3 innings and getting raked for seven runs - one more than in his previous six starts combined - to absorb his first loss since June 26.
Polanco's two-out single in the first put Miami on the board before Mathis connected for his fifth homer in the second. The Marlins broke it open in the third when Solano singled home a run and Lucas followed with a two-RBI single before Mathis ended Wood's day with a two-run double.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Veteran RHP Freddy Garcia, acquired from Baltimore on Aug. 23, was the first September callup for the Braves and pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Wood. ... Solano ended an 11-game RBI drought, a span in which he collected only four hits in 41 at-bats. ... The Braves will continue a nine-game homestand when NL East rival New York comes to town for a three-game set on Monday while the Marlins head to Chicago to open a three-game series with the Cubs.
