Marlins 9, Cubs 1: Hanley Ramirez homered for the third consecutive game as host Miami won for the fourth time in five games.
Mark Buehrle (1-2) picked up his first NL victory, pitching eight strong innings and contributing a RBI single as Chicago lost its fourth in a row and seventh in the past nine games.
The Marlins, who scored just one run in Buehrle’s first two starts, gave the left-hander plenty of support. Donnie Murphy’s two-run homer to left in the third staked Miami to a 2-0 advantage.
Ramirez hit his fourth homer of the season in the fifth, a two-run shot with two outs off Chicago starter Matt Garza (1-1). Ramirez tied Sunday’s game with an eighth-inning homer, and snapped a tie Tuesday with another eighth-inning blast.
Miami broke the game open with a three-run sixth. Buehrle drove in Gabby Sanchez with a single to right, just the sixth major-league hit for the 12-year veteran.
On the mound, Buehrle allowed just six hits, striking out five and walking nobody. He threw 99 pitches, 61 for strikes.
Garza gave up six runs on seven hits in five innings, walking three and striking out seven. Chicago finally scored in the seventh. Jeff Baker doubled and later scored on Ian Stewart’s groundout.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Sanchez finished 3-for-4 as the Marlins finished with a season-high in runs and hits (14). ... Murphy went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. He started for second baseman Omar Infante, who is expected to miss at least two games with a mild left groin strain suffered on Saturday. … The Cubs dropped to 1-4 on their current six-game road trip. Chicago opens a six-game homestand Friday against Cincinnati. … The Cubs hope to have set-up man Kerry Wood back by Friday. Wood received cortisone shot in his right shoulder.
