Max Scherzer pitched six dominant innings and Miguel Cabrera belted a two-run home run as the Detroit Tigers evened the American League Division Series at one game apiece with a 5-3 victory over the host New York Yankees on Sunday.
Scherzer (1-0) had a no-hitter through five innings and allowed two hits in six-plus innings to improve to 4-0 lifetime against New York and send the series back to Detroit for Monday's Game 3.
AL batting champion Cabrera had three hits, including a two-run homer in the first and an RBI single in the sixth off Freddy Garcia, as Detroit rebounded from a 9-3 loss in Game 1 that spanned two days.
Cabrera's homer was his fourth in 24 career at-bats against Garcia (0-1), who had not lost at Yankee Stadium since June 7.
Magglio Ordonez had three hits and Victor Martinez and Don Kelly chipped in RBI singles to help the Tigers snap the Yankees' seven-game ALDS winning streak.
Joaquin Benoit surrendered Curtis Granderson's solo homer in the eighth and Jose Valverde coughed up two runs in the ninth on a leadoff homer by Nick Swisher and sacrifice fly by Andruw Jones before finally closing it out.
It was a non-save situation for Valverde, who was 49-for-49 in save opportunities this year.
Scherzer left after the first two batters reached in the seventh, but Benoit mowed down the next three, capped by a strikeout of Derek Jeter.
Detroit's Justin Verlander, who led the league in wins, strikeouts and ERA, will oppose 19-game winner CC Sabathia in a marquee rematch of their abbreviated rain-suspended outings in Game 1.
