Flyers 3, Capitals 2: Defenseman Michael Del Zotto snapped a tie late in the third period as host Philadelphia won its second game in as many days and improved to 8-1-4 in its last 13 contests.
Captain Claude Giroux collected a goal and an assist while Wayne Simmonds also scored for the Flyers, who won their season series against Washington with three victories in four games. Rob Zepp made 21 saves in his second straight start.
Tom Wilson and Joel Ward tallied for the Capitals, who saw their season-high four-game winning streak come to an end. Braden Holtby stopped 25 shots after making 30 saves in Saturday's 3-2 shootout victory over the New York Islanders.
Del Zotto fired a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot past Holtby’s glove with 4:13 remaining in the third period to put Philadelphia in front. Washington pulled Holtby during a power play with 58 seconds left but couldn't get the puck past Zepp, while Ward and captain Alex Ovechkin both missed the net on glorious opportunities in the final 20 minutes.
Giroux scored his first goal in 12 games while on the man advantage 4:39 into the contest and Simmonds extended his point streak to eight games by jamming his own rebound past Holtby during another power play at 1:34 of the second period. Wilson responded at 5:23 with his first goal since Nov. 29 and Ward tied the game 10 minutes later with a shot through traffic that fooled Zepp.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Philadelphia D Mark Streit and RW Jakub Voracek each registered two assists. … Ovechkin was kept off the scoresheet for a second consecutive game. … Washington finished 0-for-5 with the man advantage, while Philadelphia went 2-for-4.
