West Virginia's Miles McBride drove for a leaning bank shot with 5.9 seconds to go, spurring the 11th-ranked Mountaineers to an 88-87 victory over No. 10 Texas Tech on Monday in Morgantown, W.Va.
The Red Raiders had a final chance when Mac McClung sprinted down the floor and launched a mid-range jumper as time expired, but his shot was off target.
The final flurry came after the teams traded three timeouts with 16.2 seconds on the clock after West Virginia's Taz Sherman corralled a defensive rebound following a missed 3-point attempt by Texas Tech's Terrence Shannon Jr.
Sherman had scored on a dribble-drive with 52 seconds left to pull his team within 87-86.
Both teams held double-digit leads and lost them. West Virginia trailed 75-63 with 7:11 to go after a McClung bucket, part of his season-best, 30-point performance buoyed by 24 points after halftime.
McBride caught fire and scored 19 of his 24 points after halftime to help the Mountaineers erase the deficit.
West Virginia (11-4, 4-3 Big 12) climbed back to tie the score 84-84 on McBride's 3-pointer with 1:36 to go, but McClung answered with a wide-open 3-pointer to put Texas Tech (11-5, 4-4) back in front 87-84 with 1:10 on the clock.
Limited to only two field-goal attempts in the game's initial 12 minutes, McClung ignited a hot start for the Red Raiders to open the second half. He scored 15 points in the first eight minutes as Texas Tech turned a 39-39 deadlock into a 64-52 lead.
During that span, McClung shot 5-for-5 (3-for-3 from 3-point range) while the Mountaineers were 4-for-9 as a team.
Texas Tech closed the first half on a 13-3 run to wipe out a 10-point West Virginia advantage. The Mountaineers didn't score over the final 3:48 before halftime.
