No. 13 Louisville 64, Pittsburgh 61: Russ Smith scored 20 points and the host Cardinals snapped a three-game losing skid by defeating the Panthers in Big East play.
Gorgui Dieng had 14 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots, Chane Behanan tallied 12 points and Peyton Siva had 10 assists as Louisville (17-4, 5-3 Big East) won for the first time since beating Connecticut on Jan. 14.
Tray Woodall scored 14 points, Lamar Patterson added 10 and Talib Zanna grabbed 10 rebounds for the Panthers (17-5, 5-4), who had a four-game winning streak halted.
The Cardinals had a 37-26 lead early in the second half after a 3-pointer by Luke Hancock. Pittsburgh whittled away the deficit and trailed 53-50 after Cameron Wright’s layup with 4:50 to play. The Panthers later crept within 60-58 on a 3-pointer by Woodall with 13.3 seconds left before Dieng and Smith each hit two free throws to help the Cardinals hold on.
Louisville used a 12-0 run to take an 18-9 lead on Siva’s layup with 11:36 left in the first half. The Cardinals led by as many as 12 before settling for a 32-26 lead at the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Louisville was without starting F Wayne Blackshear (shoulder) and reserve G Kevin Ware (suspension). … The Panthers were 3-of-12 from the free-throw line. … The Cardinals beat Pittsburgh for the fourth consecutive time.
