Aaron Bright scored 20 points as Stanford held off visiting Fresno State 75-59 in the opening round of the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off on Monday.
Stanford (2-0) will face Colorado State on Tuesday with a trip to the national semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York on the line. The Rams advanced with a 75-56 win over Southern Methodist on Monday.
Jack Trotter played only nine minutes in Stanford’s 91-52 season-opening win against Central Arkansas on Friday, but had 11 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes against Fresno State (1-1).
Kevin Olekaibe scored 19 points and Jonathan Wills added 11 for Fresno State, which fell to 1-9 all-time against Stanford. The Bulldogs’ only win over the Cardinal came in 1927.
Josh Huestis had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Stanford, which outrebounded the Bulldogs 36-25. Stanford forward Dwight Powell (ankle) missed his second straight game, but could return Tuesday.
