Malcolm Delaney led the way with 23 points, five rebounds and four assists as Virginia Tech slowly pulled away from visiting Longwood 70-52 Saturday.
Longwood (7-15) was pesky much of the night. The Lancers trailed just 38-33 with 12:34 left, but Delaney converted a three-point play and the Hokies (13-5) were on their way.
Erick Green contributed 14 points and five assists for Virginia Tech, which won its third straight game. Jeff Allen added six points and 10 rebounds for the Hokies.
Antwan Carter and Aaron Mitchell led Longwood with 14 points each.
Longwood jumped on sluggish Virginia Tech early, taking a 15-10 lead 9:15 into the game. The Lancers were up 18-17 after David Robinson’s 3-pointer with 6:44 left in the first half, but the Hokies scored the next 12 points – seven by Delaney – and eased to a 29-19 halftime lead.
Virginia Tech made just 9 of 30 from the field in the first half, but the Hokies held Carter, Longwood’s leading scorer, to 1 of 6 and four points.
