Twins 3, Rangers 2: Kendrys Morales delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning as visiting Minnesota avoided a three-game sweep.
Texas closer Joakim Soria (1-3), who gave up four runs in Friday’s series opener, came on for the top of the ninth and surrendered a one-out single by Josh Willingham before Morales sent a line drive into left to plate pinch runner Sam Fuld. Glen Perkins struck out the side in the bottom of the frame for his 20th save.
Kyle Gibson (7-6) allowed two runs and eight hits in eight innings as the Twins snapped a 10-game road losing streak. Robinson Chirinos went 3-for-3 with a home run and Adrian Beltre plated a run to lead the Rangers.
Shin-Soo Choo led off the first inning with a single and moved to second on a groundout before Beltre’s two-out base hit gave Texas a quick 1-0 edge. Minnesota grabbed the lead in the third, when Jorge Polanco plated Eduardo Escobar with a check-swing double that bounced down the third-base line before scoring on Joe Mauer’s single to center.
Gibson could not get a sinker down far enough in the fifth against Chirinos, who blasted the 2-1 offering out to left-center for the tying run. Colby Lewis hung around with Gibson for six frames, striking out eight while allowing two runs and five hits.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Soria had gone nine straight appearances without allowing a run before running into the Twins. … Beltre finished 1-for-4 and is 14-for-24 over his last seven games. … The Rangers head to Baltimore for the beginning of a seven-game trip on Monday, while the Twins return home to face the Kansas City Royals.
