Yankees 8, Tigers 4: Derek Jeter had two RBIs during an eight-run third inning that featured nine consecutive hits as visiting New York knotted the series at one game apiece.
Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann each had two hits and an RBI as the Yankees pulled within 2 1/2 games of Seattle for the American League's second wild card. Shane Greene (4-1) struck out eight and allowed two runs over seven innings to stretch his unbeaten streak to six starts.
Left-hander David Price (12-10) was battered for eight runs and 12 hits in two-plus innings - the second-shortest start of his career - as Detroit fell 2 1/2 games behind first-place Kansas City in the AL Central. Victor Martinez homered and scored twice and Miguel Cabrera, Nick Castellanos and Torii Hunter added RBI hits for the Tigers, who remained two games back of Seattle.
New York beat Price into submission in the third, with leadoff batter Ellsbury starting the nine-hit binge that included RBI doubles from Jeter and Mark Teixeira and run-scoring singles from Carlos Beltran and McCann for a 4-0 lead. Brett Gardner and No. 9 hitter Francisco Cervelli added RBI singles to make it nine straight hits off Price before Ellsbury and Jeter delivered sacrifice flies off reliever Blaine Hardy to make it 8-0.
Cabrera's major league-best 42nd double plated Detroit's first run in the fourth inning and Martinez added a solo shot with two outs in the sixth off Greene to give him a career-high 26 homers. Castellanos delivered an RBI triple off reliever Adam Warren in the eighth and Hunter capped the scoring with a two-out single in the ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Retiring Yankees SS Jeter, who was honored by the Tigers in pregame ceremonies, notched his 539th career double to tie Al Simmons for 35th place on the all-time list. ... Price, who matched his career worst with 12 hits allowed, became the first pitcher to surrender nine straight hits since Houston's Bob Forsch in 1989. ... Ellsbury continued his torrid stretch with his sixth multi-hit contest in nine games and is 8-for-13 with three homers, six RBIs and five runs scored in his last three.
