Braves 11, Pirates 3: Justin Upton homered and drove in five runs to back a solid outing by Aaron Harang as visiting Atlanta coasted past reeling Pittsburgh.
Jason Heyward had two hits and three RBIs, B.J. Upton singled in a run and scored twice and Evan Gattis added a late solo shot as part of a 14-hit attack for the Braves. Harang (10-7) got into the act with a run-scoring single while allowing three runs in 8 1/3 innings as Atlanta won its fifth straight and pulled even with San Francisco for the second wild-card spot in the National League.
Francisco Liriano (3-10) was pounded for nine runs - seven earned - and 10 hits in four innings as the Pirates lost their seventh straight. All-Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen was 0-for-4 in his return from the disabled list as Pittsburgh remained two games out in the wild-card race.
Harang's two-out base hit in the second started the scoring and Justin Upton followed a pair of singles in the third with a homer to left to make it 4-0. B.J. Upton doubled and scored on Heyward's base hit in the fourth and Atlanta sent 10 men to the plate in a five-run fifth to make it 10-1.
Justin Upton's two-run single capped that rally, which allowed Harang to cruise to his longest start of the year. Reliever Brandon Cumpton's first career RBI on a base hit in the fifth highlighted the meager showing for the Pirates, who ended Harang's bid for a complete game with Ike Davis' run-scoring single in the ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cumpton allowed two runs and struck out five in five innings of relief. ... Harang's RBI was the 21st of his career and his first since 2012. ... Pittsburgh RF Travis Snider doubled and scored on 2B Neil Walker's grounder in the fourth. Snider is 16-for-38 during a 10-game hitting streak.
