Mets 6, Phillies 4: David Wright homered in his first at-bat off the disabled list and visiting New York edged Philadelphia in the opener of the three-game series.
Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-3) yielded four runs (two earned) with six strikeouts over six innings for the Mets, who have won five of their last eight games. LaTroy Hawkins worked a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 14 opportunities.
The Mets scored three times in the first off Cole Hamels (8-14) when Daniel Murphy singled in a run and Wright followed with a two-run blast into the right-field seats. Wright, who went 2-for-5 after missing nearly seven weeks with a strained hamstring, hit his 17th homer of the season and passed Mike Piazza for the second-most home runs in franchise history with 221.
Andrew Brown’s run-scoring single put the Mets ahead 4-0 in the third and Eric Young Jr. added an RBI single in the fourth. The Phillies cut the deficit to 5-4 in the fourth when Darin Ruf’s two-run double sparked a four-run rally.
The Mets added an insurance run in the seventh when Murphy and Wright hit consecutive singles and Murphy scored on Josh Satin’s fielder’s choice. Murphy went 3-for-5 with three runs scored for New York, which has won four of its last five series in Philadelphia.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Phillies announced that RHP Kyle Kendrick will miss the rest of the season with tendinitis in his right shoulder. … The loss assured the Phillies of a sub-.500 record for the first time since 2002, when they went 80-81. … Wright is batting .345 (19-for-55) with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 13 games against the Phillies this season.
