Dodgers 2, Padres 1: Yasiel Puig blasted a tiebreaking home run in the sixth and Zack Greinke tossed seven strong innings as Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep of visiting San Diego.
Greinke (14-3) surrendered one run on two hits with seven strikeouts for his sixth consecutive victory and Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save. Los Angeles recorded its 10th sweep of the season and moved 11 1/2 games ahead of second-place Arizona in the National League West.
San Diego, which lost for the fifth time in its last six games, led briefly after Alexi Amarista singled in a run in the third. The Dodgers answered in the bottom half when Carl Crawford doubled with two outs and scored on Mark Ellis’ single off Tyson Ross, who had a career-high 10 strikeouts over five innings of one-run ball.
Puig broke the tie in the sixth with a solo homer into the left-field seats off Dale Thayer (2-5), giving him four home runs in his first 10 games against the Padres. Ellis, Puig and Crawford had two hits apiece for the Dodgers, who moved a season-high 26 games over .500 at 81-55.
San Diego was held to three hits, including Reymond Fuentes’ first major-league hit in the eighth inning. Fuentes later moved to third base with two outs before Chris Denorfia grounded out to pitcher Paco Rodriguez to end the threat.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Newly acquired INF Michael Young will wear No. 10 when he makes his Dodgers debut on Monday at Colorado. … Padres 3B Chase Headley missed his fourth straight game with a stiff back. … Greinke added a single and stolen base to become the first Dodgers pitcher with two stolen bases in a season since Orel Hershiser in 1987.
