Astros 6, Mariners 1: Chris Carter drilled a go-ahead two-run double as visiting Houston sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the ninth inning to halt a six-game losing streak.

Nick Franklin gave Seattle a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. But the Astros loaded the bases against struggling closer Tom Wilhelmsen (0-2) in the ninth and Carter hit the ball over the head of left fielder Jason Bay to drive in Jason Castro and Tyler Crowe.

Brandon Barnes added a run-scoring single off Bay’s glove, Jose Altuve singled in two runs and Crowe drew a bases-loaded walk as Houston erupted from an offensive slump that saw it score just seven runs during its skid. Paul Clemens (4-2) got the final four outs for the Astros.

Jeremy Bonderman pitched eight scoreless innings and was in line for the win before the collapse of the Seattle bullpen. Bonderman struck out five and allowed three hits and two walks in his third start since joining the Mariners.

Houston starter Jordan Lyles also was superb as he struck out a career-best 10 in seven innings while yielding three hits and walking two. He has surrendered only seven earned runs in 37 2/3 innings over his last six starts.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle 1B Kendrys Morales (back) and OF Michael Morse (quadriceps) both sat out with injuries. … The Astros had been blanked in 17 consecutive innings before their six-run ninth. … Mariners C Mike Zunino made his major-league debut and went 1-for-4 with a fourth-inning single. Zunino was the third overall pick by the Mariners in the 2012 first-year draft.
