Tigers 9, Yankees 3: Torii Hunter clubbed a three-run homer and had four RBIs and Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson added solo shots as visiting Detroit evened the series at one game apiece.

Anibal Sanchez (10-7) was the beneficiary of the offensive barrage, winning his third straight decision by giving up two runs on four hits and striking out eight. His only blip was serving up a two-run homer to Lyle Overbay as the Tigers improved to 13-1 in their last 14 games.

Hunter and Cabrera each had three hits, as did Don Kelly, whose two-run single capped a decisive four-run fifth inning. Jackson homered, tripled and scored three runs as Detroit moved eight games ahead of Cleveland atop the American League Central. Overbay added an RBI single in the ninth to account for all three New York runs.

Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes (4-11) lasted 4 1/3 innings and was roughed up for four runs on seven hits in dropping his fourth consecutive decision. It marked the ninth time Hughes was unable to get through five innings - the most in the majors - as New York failed in its bid to win back-to-back games for the first time since July 11-12.

Cabrera swatted his 35th homer in the third for a 2-0 lead before Detroit broke it open in the fifth. Jackson homered with one out and Hunter singled to end Hughes' day in favor of Preston Claiborne, who was greeted by Victor Martinez's RBI double down the left-field line before Kelly looped a single over the infield to plate two runs for a 6-0 edge.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cabrera's third-inning blast extended his hitting streak to eight games and RBI streak to five. It was also his fifth homer in 25 at-bats versus Hughes, against whom he is batting .560 (14-for-25). ... Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez was not in the starting lineup one day after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his 2013 home debut and LF Alfonso Soriano was 0-for-4 to remain stuck on 1,999 career hits. ... Jackson, who is 6-for-10 with five extra-base hits in the series against his former team, had his fourth straight multiple-hit game and ran his hitting streak to six.
